The police have decided to prosecute Somsak Jeamteerasakul, a historian at Thammasat University, for lèse majesté, after the army lodged a complaint against him over a year ago.

He has been told by the police to report to the public prosecutor on 20 Nov.

On 11 May 2011, Somsak reported to police at Nang Lerng Police Station to acknowledge the charges filed by the Royal Thai Army over two articles which he had written in response to Princess Chulabhorn’s interview and which had been published on several websites in late March and April that year.

He denied the charges and at that stage was not required to seek bail.

According to his post about the case on his Facebook page, he felt disappointed by the police decision because he believed that the case was baseless even to the point that it should not have warranted any complaint in the first place.

Section 112 of the Criminal Code provides protection only for the King, the Queen, the Heir-Apparent and the Regent.
