The European Union on Monday suspended all official visits, called off a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement and instituted a review of military cooperation with Thailand to protest the military takeover which took place last month.

The 28-country bloc concluded after its foreign affairs meeting held in Luxembourg that until an elected government is in place, the EU and its Member States will halt cooperation and “consider further possible measures, depending on circumstances.”

In the council’s conclusions on Thailand released to the public, the EU also called on the junta to release all political detainees, refrain from further arrests and remove media censorship.

“The military leadership's recent announcement falls short of the credible roadmap for a return to constitutional rule which the situation requires. Fully functioning democratic institutions must be brought back to ensure the protection and welfare of all citizens,” the EU stated in its conclusions.
