Dozens of activists gathered at the Royal Plaza early on the morning of June 24 to commemorate the 1932 revolution led by the People’s Party which changed Thailand from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy.
The activity was led by a poet Rawee Sirissaranan, also known as 'Wad Rawee' who chairs the group 'Monsoon Poet Society.'
Police and security officers heavily secured the area and set up a “registration table” for anyone wishing to participate in the activity to sign their names.
Participants laid flowers as offerings on the plaque set into the ground. Later, they wanted to release balloons as a symbolic activity with the theme “sending ambition to the People’s Party”, however the police prevented them for fear that the balloons may float over the Royal Grounds.
They later had to move the activity to the Democracy Monument on Ratchadamnoen Road.
The commemoration is held every year by a small group of activists to celebrate Pridi Panomyong and other members of the People’s Party, with a candlelit vigil, offerings of flowers and poetry, and cleaning the plaque.
